LOCAL WOMEN RETURN TO CLUB RUGBY

Welcome the Wollongong Vikings (aka the Valkyries) Womens Rugby Union website.

On April 23 2005 local women’s rugby players will play their first competition game for over two years. The Illawarra has been without women’s club rugby since 2002, but this year women from all over the local region are pulling the boots back on thanks to an accepted affiliation application with both the Sydney Women’s Rugby Union, and the Wollongong Vikings Rugby Union Club.

Local unigames manager Heidi Hanlon has been campaigning and negotiating with the SWRU and local Wollongong clubs since September last year in an attempt to resurrect the sport locally. “We have been building our player base through playing unigames for the last two years with great success, including our gold medal win at the Eastern University Games last year. We believe we’re now in a strong enough position to once again take on the world of club rugby”.

Ultimately the plan is to re-create the local competition, and have all clubs take on a women’s team. For now however, the Viking women are joining the Sydney 2nd grade competition, with the aim of entering both a 1st and 2nd grade team within the next few years. The team hopes that they will gain enough interest from local women wishing to join the sport over the next 5 years to re-launch a local competition and encourage other clubs to join in the fun and create women’s teams of their own.

Wollongong Vikings club president Tony Mahar believes the addition of a women’s team to the Vikings club has fitted the last piece to their large club puzzle and hopes that other clubs will eventually follow suit. “Our club now includes the full rugby kit of juniors, colts, seniors and womens, and we’re the only local club that can boost that fact!” A timely addition as the club approaches its 50th year in 2007.

The womens team includes players from past competitions, players coming across from unigames, and also women playing the sport for the very first time. All interested female players, new and old, can find out more about the sport and the team by emailing vikingsWRU@hotmail.com or phoning 0417089530.

EX Vikings winger lil' Katie Munro flies up the sideline to score another for Illawarra at the NSW Country Womens Championships 2005.
